AUDITORY PROCESSING DISORDER.
In recent years, there has been a significant increase in professional and public consciousness of auditory processing disorders (APD). Children and adults with APD have difficulties with listening despite having normal hearing. Auditory processing refers to the analysis of sounds received by the hearing system within the brain to make sense out of them. Individuals with APD may do well under most ideal listening conditions but they have trouble understanding sub-optimal speech for e.g. with background noise, rapid speech or competing speech. They may also have difficulty in localizing sounds or discriminating one sound from another.
Despite the awareness of APD, a consistent approach to diagnosis and treatment has yet to be determined especially given the complex and heterogeneous clinical profiles of the disorder. APD can occur with other comorbid conditions for e.g. attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), learning disabilities, reading disorders, and speech and language disorders, hence making the process of differential diagnosis a challenging one.
This workshop will include up-to-date coverage of topics such as:
-
Does APD exist?
-
How do we diagnose APD and is the effort worth it?
-
How can we help individuals with APD?
-
What are the future directions for APD?
-
What are the challenges of APD testing in Singapore?
The APD Masterclass will also include a panel discussion of case studies and hands-on session.
The workshop is targeted at audiologists and other professionals involved in the management of APD.
